Estero was home to the Koreshan Unity settlement, a utopian community that believed we live on the inside of a hollow Earth—talk about having an "inside" perspective on real estate! The settlement's leader, Dr. Cyrus Teed, legally changed his name to "Koresh" (sound familiar?)—he was definitely thinking "outside the box," or rather, inside the sphere. Estero didn't officially incorporate as a village until 2014, making it one of Florida's newest municipalities—the ultimate "new kid on the block"! The name "Estero" means estuary in Spanish, which is "bay-sically" perfect since it sits on Estero Bay. Florida Gulf Coast University's mascot is Azul the Eagle, and the campus has become such a basketball powerhouse that they earned the nickname "Dunk City"—now that's what we call "soaring" to new heights in a young community!
